Earthquake Drill

We live in earthquake country and sooner or later we are going to have an earthquake. Being the “boy scout” type I figured we should prepare Lukas for the inevitable shaker. Nothing too stressful, just make some noise, turn out the lights and walk around the house with flashlights. The other night at dinner I announced to Lukas that we would have an “earthquake drill” after we ate. His eyes lit up and he asked what an earthquake was. I did my best to provide a simple answer that wouldn’t frighten him. He was very excited about the drill. The drill…the drill…. It finally dawned on me that his only concept of a drill was our cordless drill and his toy drill set. Thankfully my drill involved flashlights, so he exchanged the idea of playing with drills with playing with flashlights. The drill went OK, although he didn’t like it when we shook his bed to make noise. Hopefully our next earthquake will be in the four to five range, which should help to break Lukas in to living in California.

Yeah, I was wondering how he was going to sleep after that adventure...would he wake up every hour and ask us to check under the bed and leave the closet light on? But he slept just fine!
