Today I heard on the radio that most of California's avocado crop was destroyed this past weekend by the freezing weather, which lasted 10 hours in some places. The industry (and the rest of us!) are especially sad because this means there may be no guacamole for the Super Bowl...the single day when the most guacamole is consumed. We'll be paying primo prices for Brazilian avocados.
We have an avocado tree in our backyard that has been quite fruitful, but it only fruits every other year (apparently this is common with avocados). This was an off year for our tree, so we got about 4 avocados, compared to the 40-50 (?) we got last year. We're just hoping the freeze didn't kill the blooms, because it is currently blooming for next fall's crop. Tom used a hose on Sunday morning to spray the avocado, lime, orange and tangerine trees, as well as the other plants, so hopefully they're ok. Of course, our peach tree is loving the cold weather, so we might have a bumper crop of peaches this year!
