It's been more than three days since the last time Natalie threw up, and she had a regular poop today so I guess she's over the bug. She also started eating by mouth much better yesterday, and today we're back to 3 ounces of baby food by mouth, 2 ounces of formula by tube. Whew! I was really worried that she wouldn't go back to eating by mouth, because she once again saw how easy it was (for her) to feed by tube.
It is something to consider about when we finally take the feeding tube out. What I've heard as general practice is that a child has to have continuous weight gain for 6 months without using the tube, before the doctor will consider removing the feeding tube (we can actually take the tube out at home and the hole will close up in less than a day). We're going to add to our mental checklist that she also has to be able to sustain herself by mouth during an illness. She's done much better at eating during an illness this last time...continuing to eat while sick...but she eventually did refuse to take anything by mouth. We hope that as she becomes a stronger eater, she will also be able to sustain herself while sick.
