Programming our kids

This morning Tom suggested watching It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I said, ok, but it will hold Lukas' attention for less than ten minutes. He bet me that Lukas would watch if for at least 30 minutes before becoming bored. I said, ok, whoever loses makes dinner. Tom was closer...22 minutes into the movie, Lukas distracted himself with something else...but ended coming back and watching nearly the whole movie. So I went to Costco for a large pepperoni pizza for dinner.

Don't get me wrong, I love the movie. I loved it as a kid...it was one of those movies that my parents let me stay up to watch when it was on TV, but I inevitably fell asleep before the ending. But my memories of it are when I was much older than (almost) three. Tom kept Lukas involved in the movie with the many vehicles they used and Spencer Tracy's hat getting run over. My favorite line is at the beginning when one of them said he would pay taxes on the bad money they found, "Even businessmen, who rob and cheat and steal from people everyday, even they have to pay taxes."

We took an intermission for lunch, and I mentioned to Lukas that the movie is about greed and tried to explain what that is. He just knew the movie is silly. It's fun to share with our kids the culture (movie, music, books) we remember growing up.

The kids are doing better, and I'm doing a little better, but the hacking chest cough is really getting to us. Natalie's coughs can lead to throwing up her meal, so we've been giving her less formula and suctioning her to make sure she's as clear as possible. During her afternoon meal, I gave her 5 ounces of strawberry Yoplait and she had no problem swallowing. I guess liking the food makes a big difference when you're having problems eating!
