A short ride

My sister, Rose, and her husband Gary started on a road trip at the end of last month. They rented a car and drove to Crescent City, where they ditched the car and started a two-week bike trek down the California coast. They plan to finish in San Diego around May 13-15, rent a car and drive home.

Gary called Sunday night to give a report, but we were out at the wedding. We were excited to talk to him tonight when he called from just north of San Francisco. He said the last three days they rode 90 miles, 80 miles and 60 miles. The distance traveled each day is dictated by the grade of the hills. Gary said this is the hardest riding he's ever done, and that's saying something, since he's crossed the U.S. by bike (with Rose, my brother Julian and other friends in college) and Canada (with just his brother--did he cross Canada twice? I think so.) Apparently the previous trips had better grades than they're finding on the 101 and the 1.

They have brought along tents, sleeping bags and mats just in case, but they've been staying in motels along the way and buying food as they need it or eating in restaurants. I'm glad to hear they're not roughing it too hard!

Anyway, I'll give an update as I hear it...hopefully with "after" pictures when they visit us.
