Today was Lukas' first official dentist visit. In the past, the dentist has looked in his mouth when Lukas came with me and Tom for our visits, but today Lukas was the official patient. He did great! We talked about what would happen in advance, and he did well at keeping his mouth open for about 10 minutes of cleaning, and then he just couldn't do it anymore, so Mrs. P. moved on to the polishing. Then Dr. P. checked out his teeth and pronounced everything healthy. Lukas loved being in charge of the suction tube (he loves all things vacuum!) Now Tom and I need to keep up the habit of brushing Lukas and Natalie's teeth every night: we usually get in step on it for a couple weeks and then slack off.
We switched Lukas to fluoride toothpaste tonight after he understood he's not to swallow it. But Natalie still gets the baby toothpaste. I brush her teeth, then give her the toothbrush and she brushes her front teeth pretty well....and drools all over herself because that toothpaste is so yummy!
We haven't decided if we're going to look for a pediatric dentist for Natalie, or just use our family dentist. RTS often comes with funny dental issues, and RTS kids often have oral aversions that make dental care difficult. So far, Natalie hasn't shown either of those problems, although she will probably need braces. But her teeth are pretty clean so far, so we don't need to push it yet.
