First Day of School

Hey, it's the day after Labor Day, which is when school should start, right? (Am I showing my age?) So I decided that today would be the first day of school for Lukas (for this year). Actually, Konrad decided that this would be the first day of school, since he slept through the night for the first time in a long time last night, so I didn't need to take a nap during his nap.

Actually, I'll take that back...I decided that this would be the first day of school because this weekend I bit the bullet and let Konrad cry it out the past three mornings, so this morning (the fourth morning) he slept until we woke up (thanks, Carla, for the encouragement!)

And Cindy said, "It is very good to have a full night's, uninterrupted sleep."

For the past month, I've been going into Konrad's room to "plug him in" to the pacifier at least once a night, and often up to four times a night...not wanting his cries to disturb the rest of the family. Enough is enough!

Anyway, whoever decided it, today after we came home from Bible study and Natalie and Konrad were in bed for naps, I announced that today was the first day of school, and that there would be a celebration afterward.

Lukas worked on telling time (on a rotary clock, not a digital, of course!), his reading and writing lessons, and counting. He's doing well at reading the hour and the half hour on the clock, but I want him to be stronger in it before I introduce the rest of telling time.

I hadn't had him count in a couple weeks, and this time he counted until 49 with no prompting...then he didn't know what comes after 49. Well, no prompting if you don't count when he went from 29 to 30 to 41. Lukas has a hard time saying the "th" sound, so he says 30 like "furty"... so it went like this: "twenty-nine, furty, forty-one, forty-two..." So I had to stop him and get him back on track.

Then he wanted to draw a detailed drawing of the local grocery store. I wanted to have the celebration, but he was not to be dissuaded from his drawing, so I went to check my email. Then he came and said, "We forgot to have the celebration!" Here's the picture of our celebration, Lukas and his teacher on the first day of school.

It's going to work a lot better for me to work with him during the other kids' naps...before this, he's been reading to himself and playing quietly while I tried to nap, and we haven't had a lesson in several weeks. I'd still love to have a nap today, but I'm not so tired that I "have" to have it. Maybe this coming weekend I'll be able to catch up and feel great!
