How cool is that?

As if going to Disneyland in the morning and going to school at noon wasn't enough, Natalie saw her ophthalmologist this afternoon.  It was an hour and a half appointment (wait, see doctor, get drops to dilate eyes, wait, wait, wait, see doctor again, get prescription for glasses).  The bad news is that Natalie has become even more nearsighted.  This is disappointing for us, but the doctor doesn't seem overly concerned, "There are lots of typical people with -15 in their glasses."  Natalie's new prescription is -11.5 and -12.75.  Those are very strong glasses!  She will have her eye pressures checked again under anesthesia in three months.

But the fun news was that Natalie cooperated very well with the examination.  As the doctor was flipping through his video options (he uses videos to keep the kids looking at the wall ahead so he can look in their eyes with a bright light), the capital letter 'E' came on the screen.  Natalie said, "E."  I commented that she knows all her letters, and the doctor said, "All of them?  Then we'll check her eyes that way too."

So after he had looked in her eyes with his light, he went back to showing her different letters, one at a time, on the screen.  Natalie named all the letters he showed, about 5 letters, and he said that was 20/50 (with her glasses on).  Then he decreased the size to a smaller letter and Natalie did not respond.  I thought it was just because it was so small that she didn't notice the letter so far away, but now that I think about it, it was probably because she couldn't see it clearly.

How cool is that, that she can do a more normal eye exam, telling us what she can see and what she can't, just like the rest of us?
