Eye appointment

In between moving the kids into their new bedroom today, we also took time out to drug Natalie with Benadryl for her glaucoma appointment. The specialist suggested trying to check the pressure in her eyes while asleep, before going the sedation-in-a-hospital route.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. Natalie is a light sleeper, so the Benadryl made her sleep, but as soon as the doctor touched her face to open her eyes, she woke up and protested. We tried several times, with no success. Crying makes the pressure in her eyes jump, so there were only false readings. The double challenge was to give her the numbing drops in her eyes, and try to have her fall asleep right away so her pressure could be checked before the numbing drops wore off (in 5 minutes!)

So Plan B is to schedule an exam under sedation. We're going to wait until the baby is born to make the appointment in early 2008. But the doctor felt if we got a low reading of the pressure at this next exam, we wouldn't have to check her eyes again for a while...he wouldn't think there is a risk of glaucoma developing in a short period.
