Our avocado tree has had a bumper crop this year, so what do we do with all the extra avocados? Teach our son a valuable lesson in economics.
I picked over 60 large avocados in the morning and suggested to Lukas that we sell them in front of the house. He was quite excited about the idea. After settling on a price with Cindy (make it cheap so Lukas can be instantly successful!), she made a sign. I also picked some limes to add some variety to Lukas' roadside stand.
Stand? Actually an empty diaper box. After showing Lukas the art of holding the sign (Make sure the sign is not upside down and pointed toward your customers) he stood on the curb and jumped up and down as the very first car went by. The car stopped! Lukas had his first sale. Nine avocados for three dollars.
The next three or four cars didn't stop, which greatly frustrated Lukas. "Dad, they aren't stopping!" I coached him on patience and perseverance, and the sales slowly trickled in. After 45 minutes Lukas had made $13 with a promise by a neighbor to come back later with $2.
After separating out 10% for a tithe, we suggested to Lukas that he could spend his money on craft items such as scotch tape (he uses it by the yard). Today we went to Walmart and he purchased tape, washable markers and colored paper with $9. The rest of his hard earned money is safely tucked away inside his piggy bank.

that is so neat! I'm sure Lukas will definately remember this lesson. Kudos to you for teaching him to tithe! Wish I could've bought some avacados...they're so expensive here!
Way to go Lukas.
