What We Did, Part 3

Another big thing we did on this trip was hiking. We hiked around the lake, and we visited the largest tree in the world, and several other favorite hikes through the sequoia trees. We also climbed the 172 steps up Buck Rock, a fire lookout tower. Lukas is sitting on the chair the lookout sits on during lightning storms, with glass insulators on the feet.

We had a lot of discussion of how we're going to hike in the future as Natalie grows. She walks great, but she's still wobbly on uneven surfaces, and has no interest in walking more than 100 feet. But she weighs more than 35 pounds and she's getting taller and taller...I don't know how much longer she'll be comfortable in the child backpack, or how much longer we'll be comfortable carrying her. I don't think we had this issue with Lukas, because when he outgrew the backpack, I was pregnant with Natalie and not prone to hiking, and then Natalie was born and we basically didn't do anything rigorous like hiking or camping for over a year. Now we have Natalie (and Konrad right behind her) ready to outgrow the packs, but not ready to walk very far on their own. We might be looking at off-road strollers, but don't like the idea of getting two. Tom suggested renting a burro...ok, we're brainstorming! Please send us your suggestions. We might be staying on smooth trails for a while.

Meanwhile, here are a few more shots of our fun hikes. And check back tomorrow for the story of a near-death experience.
