Talking

I just got off the phone with Miss Becky, Natalie's SLP. Becky was beside herself to let me know how Natalie did today.

She was working with Natalie for a few minutes while the rest of the class was doing group OT, because Natalie's individual OT was coming soon.  Becky said that when she asked Natalie what the girl in the picture was doing, Natalie said, "The girl is combing baby doll's hair."  Becky was excited because she had gone through that with Natalie a week ago, but Natalie remembered it so well, with no prompting from Becky.

Then she said Natalie got squirmy and wouldn't sit still.  Finally Becky said, "Natalie, what do you want to do?" because Natalie wouldn't sit still.

Natalie replied, "I want to go play with my friends."

Becky was floored.  Natalie spoke a complete sentence, including all the filler words (a month ago she would have said, "I want play friends."

Becky said she has never seen anything like the improvement Natalie has shown in such a short amount of time (when Becky met Natalie exactly a year ago, Natalie had no spoken words...only a few sounds and 20-30 signs).  She credited what we do at home, and I replied that not every kid is wired to speak, but it seems like everything is set up at home and at school to help Natalie in the way she needs help, so it's working for her.  Becky agreed.

Tom and I have also seen a lot of improvement recently in Natalie's sentence structure.  Natalie started taking children's chewable Omega-3 supplements three weeks ago since another RTS mom said it helped her child...is that the difference for the speedy improvement?  I don't know!

I will say that Natalie is still "lazy" with her pronunciation of words.  When we work with her on diction, she is much more clear in her speech, compared to when she's just playing around the house...her speech tends to be more difficult to understand.  But everything is improving: diction, syntax, vocabulary...at an amazing rate!

Go Natalie!

Angelica, the bottle we have came from Costco. I just now checked and the only reference to age is that it's not recommended for children under age 4 because of choking hazard. It's like a gummy bear...when Jesus can eat a gummy bear, he can probably handle this. There might be other forms of Omega-3 that would dissolve better than this gummy form.

That is amazing! More than just the language aspect, she wants to go play with her friends! I love that she is social and that friends are important to her.
