Valentine's Day and Other Events

I was remiss in not taking pictures of and posting about our family's Valentine's celebrations...maybe because there were SO many different little things crammed into the past week, I just completely ignored documenting, in favor of actually doing.

So here's the run-down of what we did:

Lukas took valentines to school on Tuesday to give to his school-mates (25 in all).  I helped him make home-made valentines during the previous week.  I figured, since he can write, he could make his own instead of using store-bought ones.  With the amount of effort it took, I might change that next year (!) but we'll see what he feels like doing then.

Natalie took valentines to school on Thursday.  Since she can't write, I wrote her name on store-bought valentines.  Both kids came home with boatloads of candy that we don't usually eat...but it came in handy!

Friday was a day off school for Natalie, so we all went to visit Tom at work and surprise him with heart-shaped cookies that Lukas and I baked on Thursday.  Tom mentioned several times that he was really surprised this time when we visited...apparently he normally hears Natalie chatting the minute we get off the elevator.

Saturday we went to a model train show in Long Beach.  Parking was a bear, so when we realized we'd left the camera in the car right before we entered the convention center, we decided not to go back and get it and just enjoy the show (hence, no photos!)  The kids really enjoyed watching the model trains going around their model cities and countrysides...and so many train enthusiasts are now putting their models down at a level that kids can see without being picked up...THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! So Tom and I had a nice time too, because we didn't have to pick Natalie and Konrad up as much as we would have otherwise.  At lunch, I brought some of the candy from the valentines Lukas and Natalie received for dessert, and they tried out the candy...and Lukas learned that he doesn't really like some kinds of candy.  Shocker!  And Tom and I learned that there are some really weird kinds of candy that we won't be buying (and we don't buy much candy besides chocolate to begin with) because they are a mess! (What's with that dipping candy?)

Sunday morning we had fresh baked cinnamon rolls for breakfast (Tom's new favorite breakfast) and shared valentines with each other.  The kids loved the cards we got them, but I think they liked the singing card Tom got me the best "So Happy Together!"  After church (more valentines given in Sunday School) we went to dinner and study at a friends' house near ours and enjoyed being the last people to leave because we had the shortest drive home!

Today, Monday, after Natalie's audiology test (another blog post), we all went to the beach and played in the sand.  The waves were VERY strong, so we stayed out of the water, but since Tom brought pails of water to our site to help with sand creations, of course the kids got wet and had to remove clothes that got itchy with sand and water. It was wonderfully warm and beautiful, and the perfect end to a Valentine's weekend...celebrating the love of our family and the love of our friends.

How was your Valentine's?
