What We're Doing This Summer

It's summer break for all but one (Natalie is in school three more weeks and then she has a short break before summer school) and we have big plans for a lot of FUN.  Some things are already scheduled and some things are on the to-do list, but here's what we're planning for the summer:

  1. Lots of play dates (email me to get on our schedule!)
  2. A family trip to San Diego for an early celebration of our 10th Anniversary (sorry, you're not invited to that!)  ;)
  3. Swimming lessons as well as just playing in the pool
  4. A big camping trip to the mountains (if we can find a place that won't have snow after all the snow in the Sierras this winter and spring)
  5. Visiting family  (didn't you know we were coming to see you?)

Here's what I'm planning that I'm trying to make NOT look like school during the summer:
  • Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert.  This has been a favorite in our house since Lukas was a baby.  This morning as we read it, I suggested making a list of all the fruits and vegetables in the book, then posting the list and checking each off as we eat it this summer.  Some fruit won't be available until later, and some may be impossible to find (even in SoCal).  Lukas is currently typing the list on the computer, which may take another 3 days.
  • Draw Write Now by Marie Hablitzel and Kim Stitzer.  Lukas still draws a lot of stick figures and only wants to draw pipes and streets, so I wanted to work on drawing more realistic pictures.  We've already done the first two lessons and Lukas and Konrad love it!  And I love drawing like a kid too!
  • First Language Lessons by Jessie Wise.  We completed the first level for first grade.  So Lukas doesn't forget everything, we're going to do one lesson a week during the summer of the second level...getting started on second grade early.  It means that when we actually start second grade, we should only have to do 2-3 lessons a week to finish in the school year.
  • Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Engelmann.  I've started and stopped this with both Natalie and Konrad, and I'd like to make some progress during the summer with both.  Konrad will be easier since he won't be in summer school, but I hope to also work on it in the afternoon with Natalie.
  • Reading books from the library.  Lukas' writing course, Writing With Ease, used snippets from literature, which left him wondering how the story ended.  Now we can take that textbook to the library and check out the complete books and read the rest of the story.
  • Helping Dominik like books.  I'm a little ashamed to report that Dominik doesn't like to be read to.  I can't imagine how this happened, except that I didn't spend enough time with him reading (I spent SOOOO much time reading with Natalie and Lukas, less time with Konrad, and very little time with Dominik).  I really want to work with Dominik on reading several times a day, every day this summer.
  • Something with math.  Lukas can do everything he learned in first grade math very well, except tell time.  So we'll be working on the clock, as well as fun stuff like measuring and adding.  And playing with coins...he always loves that.
A personal goal of mine is to work out...for that to happen, I have to go to bed early so I can get up early to work out before everyone else wakes up.  So the primary goal is to go to bed early and the secondary goal is to work out...right?

What are you doing this summer?

Wow, sounds like you are going to have a great Summer! I plan on going to Lagoon (it's a little theme park) with my sister. We want to try out all of the new roller coasters. I'm going to take Sawyer to the Zoo and hopefully we can swim. Good luck with all of your adventures!

I love the thought of a water slide park...might have to get a sitter for Dominik, though!
