It hasn't been a week since Natalie's eye surgery, but today was her one-week follow up! It all had to do with getting an appointment with the surgeon in Orange County instead of having to drive up to LA again...today was the day! The doctor was very pleased with how Natalie's eye looks. It is really healing very well. There is still some redness in the white of her eye, but it looks much better than it did the day after.
I had actually expected the worst: that Natalie would be rubbing her eye and pulling at it and maybe rolling around in pain at night. The whole surgery thing (since she got her eye patch off) has not seemed to phase her at all. Praise God! The next check up is at the end of the month, and then we'll schedule another EUA in another month or two to check the pressure in both her eyes...to see if the right eye is still responding well to drops and if the left eye is doing well with the shunt.
The only down side now is the drop regimen: 5 drops a day in one eye, 8 drops a day in the other (and don't get confused which bottles go with which eye!) AND no swimming for 4-6 weeks. Not that we have a pool, but we were planning to go to the beach this holiday weekend, so we'll be looking for other recreational opportunities. We hope you have a great weekend!

so glad she's being such a trooper. what's your strategy for getting eyedrops in a kid's eye? seems like a nearly impossible task, but i figure you must have some trick?
Kristin, first step is to get another adult to hold her head still. If Tom's busy or not at home, I lay her down on the floor, straddle-sit in front of her, with my feet cupping her head. Sometimes I give her a chocolate chip.
