Gone fishin'

We were excited to go to a family fishing day for special needs kids and their families sponsored by our Regional Center.  Lukas doesn't remember the last time he went fishing (now that I think about it, he was under three years of age), so he was quite excited about catching a fish.

But just because you fish doesn't mean you catch a fish.

What a life lesson for our children to learn.  Lukas was quite disappointed when he didn't catch a fish within the first minute.  "Why is it taking so long?"  But when we finally had to leave without anyone in our family catching any fish, he was quite upset.  Having kids has taught me a lot about how God views us when we are disappointed.  I know in the first years of Natalie's life I acted a lot like Lukas did today, and it really made me stop and think about my behavior when I see Lukas have a fit:  is this how God sees me?  Yes, they are both understandable reactions to circumstances for a child...and a child of God.  But something we're both working to mature out of.

The other "live and learn" thing involved the meal that was supposed to be provided by a major chicken restaurant chain (famous for its chicken sandwiches) that has been expanding in our area.  They backed out "at the last minute" so the Regional Center's solution was to provide loaves of bread and jars of peanut butter and jam for us to make our own sandwiches, and that was the entire lunch.  What a disappointment!  As we fished, Tom and I quietly talked about this solution:  we'd have to make sure to get an unopened jam jar so that it wouldn't have been contaminated with peanut butter (because of Lukas' peanut allergy).  And a jam sandwich would probably not be enough for Lukas.  So we decided to leave early and get fast food tacos instead.  In the future, I'm going to plan on bringing some kind of food along so that we're not stranded in a situation like this.

Despite the disappointments, it was a wonderful day!  And we really worked to not make a big deal of the disappointments...little ears are listening to us and learning, which we see more and more every day.

Here's a short video of Natalie and Konrad playing around the trees while Lukas fished.
