One thing that made the trip up more pleasant was leaving Friday morning and stopping at Travel Town at Griffith Park for everyone to run around and to have lunch. The kids really enjoyed seeing and climbing all over the old train engines (and a few passenger cars). Even Natalie has been indoctrinated by her brothers to love trains.
After a nice break for lunch, we drove the rest of the way to Patrice and Patrick's home, arriving well before the traffic that has made our trips exhausting in the past (Natalie and Konrad even had naps on the way).
We didn't really DO a lot of stuff on this trip (which is how we like it!) besides eat the incredible meals Patrice made us (including fish and chips with fresh red snapper, homemade lasagna, and corned beef and cabbage [Tom's favorite meal]) and talking a lot. It's ironic that we didn't capture any pictures of Patrice cooking, but Tom did take a picture of Patrick making sour dough waffles in the morning (bonding with Konrad over the experience). Yes, Patrick is that tall!
We also took a morning hike down to a seal rookery near Carpinteria. There were quite a few baby seals (or are they sea lions? I think so) with their moms, including one that was less than an hour old (which one was that?)
Highlights of the trip for our kids was Lukas' trip to Lowe's with Aunt Patrice, where she buys him new sprinkler pipe supplies every time, and Natalie and Konrad chasing Patrice's dog, Lilly, all around the house. Tom's sister Christine and her husband Jim also came down one day for lunch, so it was nice to have even more family around. Another major milestone was that Lukas didn't sleep in the guest apartment with us: he slept in the main house in a room by himself. Well, ok, he came after 10 p.m. and begged to sleep with us the first night, but the second night he slept by himself in the main house with no problem.
Lukas had a blast trying out his cousin's drum set, this time without supervision. He did pretty well for the first time, don't you think?

Is that a French Bulldog Lukas is walking? My mom has one that is that exact color.
Looks like your trip was a lot of fun, I'm so jealous of your warm weather!
Lukas sounds great with those drums! you should get him a set. =)
