It's March 1, so that means the tickler in my brain is saying, "it's time to start thinking about planting tomatoes!"
All friends and family in Southern California who want to plant tomatoes, don't miss the "Monster Tomato and Pepper Sale" at the arboretum at Cal-State Fullerton on March 13-16. They have the list on their website of more than 200 varieties of tomatoes and 90 varieties of peppers (many heirloom varieties) that will be on sale. The sale starts Thursday, so if you're picky, make plans to go before the weekend. Last year we went on Saturday and there were still MANY varieties left, but of course several of the ones I wanted were already sold out.
We did great on our tomato crop last year, but due to confined space in our backyard this year (we have to share gardening with child-play areas) the tomatoes will have to be back in an area that's had nematodes in the past, so I will only be buying the nematode-resistant tomatoes and peppers this year (no heirloom varieties for us).
Just thinking about eating warm tomatoes off the vine makes me salivate. Is there anything better than a hot summer day compressed into a juicy sweet tomato? This is a picture Lukas took last year (see the toes at the bottom) of one of our early crops.
